Review of Calendar Girls directed by Madhur Bhandarkar

September 26, 2015

Calendar Girls: They amaze you, they make you laugh, they make your eyes moist and they also make you sympathise with them .

A story of 5 girls from different cultures and backgrounds who make it to Mumbai to be a part of the “glamour world” , to rub shoulders and everything else with the rich and famous in their urge to make lots of money . But soon the reality dawns , and the calendar girls crash on earth after floating on the 9th cloud [ one of them – London based girl from Pakistan – literally ! ] . All the new comers , esp . the lesser known Rohtak town girl Mayuri, give a good account of themselves . But really, it is the celebrities Suhel Seth [ in the role of a business tycoon ] and Ronit Roy [ as the photographer ] in the beginning and the Director Madhur Bhandarkar himself , briefly post interval , who steal the show . Even the famous adman Prahlad Kakkar shows up for a few moments.

The movie covers current happenings like betting and spot fixing at the Cricket League , the reality of the reality shows and the “honey traps” in a gripping manner . It engages your attention throughout its 2.15 hrs duration with the end – almost close to it actually – hitting you like tonnes of bricks .

Another entertainer from the house of Madhur Bhandarkar , although he seems to have picked up parts from his earlier movies – Page 3, Corporate and Fashion and included them here . Go and say hello to Calendar Girls . I did so, and wasn’t disappointed like I was after watching the flop show “Katti Batti” !
