Note:  This is a preview of our planned travel to Kashmir in the last week of May for the benefit of travellers  .

Our  intended travel to Kashmir [ 26 May – 1 June 2017 ]

Day 1 :

Srinagar :

Leave home at 6.45  AM for departure @ 9.25 AM . Go Air from IGI T1D.

On arrival at Srinagar Airport, proceed for lunch at Smokin’ Joes for quality Pizzas . Located in Shora building on main Road Dalgate, Near Taxi Stand/ Jan Bakers. Phones : 97977 00555 , 84938 71368, 0194-2501598, 2501599.

Krishna Dhaba at Durganag, Dalgate , opposite Batra Hotel and Residences , [ Phones:  0194-2454775 M:9419113849,  9419449347 ]  is another option.

Transfer to Peacock Houseboat – Ghat No. 1, Nageen Lake, Opp: Nageen Club . [ Phone: Rahil Ahmad  – 99064 78773 /   95963 57777 , Bashir Ahmad : 99065 82801 ]

Visit Shalimar Bagh (Garden of Love – the biggest out of the 3 Mughal gardens )  , Nishat Bagh ( Garden of Pleasure ) overlooking the crystal clear emerald green water of Dal Lake and Chashma Shahi , all within 5-6 Kms of each other on the eastern side of Dal Lake.  [ Admission tickets  are Rs 30/visitors at each garden ] . Driving time to Shalimar Bagh from Peacock Houseboats is 30 minutes [ 9.3 kms ] . From  Shalimar Bagh, it takes just 5 minutes to get to Nishat Bagh  [ 2.8 kms ] .  It will take 8 minutes (5.6 km) to get to Chashma Shahi via Boulevard Rd and Chashma Shahi Road . Proceed to Pari Mahal  – 6 minutes’ drive (1.8 km) via Pari Mahal Road .

Explore the floating markets on  Dal Lake. Go for a Shikara ride by sunset and go up to Char Chinar – an island on the lake marked with the presence of Chinar Trees.   View Shankaracharya temple from a distance . While on board , drink Kehwa and sip a cup of salted tea known as “sheer” or “noon chai” , made from special tea leaves, milk, salt, and cooked in a samavar .  A pinch of baking soda is added to help give it more of a pronounced pink color. Served with traditional Kashmiri breads such as fluffy baqerkhani , chochwor , naans mixed with nuts , sheermal  and walnut fudge . Dinner  and overnight at Peacock Houseboat .

Day 2

Sonamarg

Srinagar – Sonamarg

Leave at  9.45 AM : 2.30 hours’ drive covering 87 kms to reach Sonamarg [Meadow of Gold] . Lunch at Green Gamplings Resort owned by Kashmirport.com [ Phones: 8491962370 /9469049649 ]. Short trek on pony to Thajiwas Glacier [ 3 Kms ] . Negotiate directly with ponywallas to take you to the Glacier and return [ Max. Rs 750 – price should include Gum boots rental and all charges to be paid to the forest department ] .

Vishansar Lake, located at an altitude of 4048 meters above sea level is the most popular of all the lakes in Sonmarg, and provides one of the breathtaking views from the very top of the meadow.

At 4.30 PM , leave for Srinagar. Check in, dinner and overnight stay at Hotel Royal Batoo.  [ Phones :0194 – 2485666/ 9797734433 – [ Mr Amir Bhat – General Manager  , Ms Heemu Punjabi , Reservation Associate ]

Temperature :  7 deg –  -1 deg . 

Day 3

Gulmarg  

After breakfast leave @ 9.30 AM  for trip to Gulmarg ( Meadow of Flowers) at a height of 8800 ft above sea level. The drive is approximately 2 hours covering a distance of 52 kms from Srinagar. On way , stop by at Tangmarg for tea and snacks and soak in its scenic beauty . Take long boots and overcoats on rental basis from Tangmarg, so that you can venture around and explore Gulmarg at ease . Check in at The Meadows . 12 noon – Go for Gondola ride high above the meadow  [ first phase only @ Rs 700/person return . [ Phone:   +91 98507 61437 ] – Ref: http://gulmarggondola.com/ ] .  Walk around the bowl clicking pictures in the snow. A visit to Rani Temple [ 70 steps ! ] at the edge and St Mary’s Church at the Centre is a must . Lunch at NEDOUS , Opp. Gulmarg Golf Club, Ski Institute Road  [+91 1954 254 428 ] . Later in the afternoon, return to Meadows Hotel  for dinner and overnight stay.

Temperature : 9 deg – 2 deg.  Temperature in Tangmarg :  20 deg C – 9 deg   

Day 4

Pahalgam

Leave at  9.30 AM after breakfast for Pahalgam [ Valley of Shepherds ] :  Distance 145 Kms : 4 hrs via NH 1/ NH 44 .  On  the way, stop by at Bhijbehara to buy traditional Kashmiri breads . Check in at Eden Gardens Guest House [ Lone Shaban – Phone: 9419585785  ].  Post lunch  , enjoy the trip by ponys to the huge undulating meadow of Baisaran,  thick wooded forests of pine and cedars @ approx . Rs 1000 /pony   [ to negotiate prices ] . 

Dinner and overnight stay at Eden Gardens Guest House.

Temperature :  23 deg – 9 /10 deg .

Day 5

Pahalgam   :  Shift to  The Vellagio  [ Adil Bashir, General Manager  : Phones: 9596887571 / 01936 243388   ]

After breakfast,  hire a local XYLO taxi for Rs.1,600  and cover trip to Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari (base station for Amarnath) in around three hours in the morning session. Lunch at Dana Pani Restaurant located close to Overa Aru Wildlife Sanctuary [ Phone : 01936 243242 ] .Visit Mamleshwar Shiva Temple in the vicinity .

Overnight at the Hotel Villagio .

Distances: Pahalgam – Baisaran :  3 kms , Pahalgam – Betaab Valley :  7 kms

Day 6

Departure  for   Srinagar

Avantipur ruins – en route . Via NH 501/ NH 44  /  95 Kms  : 2 .45  hrs . Stop by to have a look at the Saffron flowers farms in Pampore .

Visit Hazratbal Shrine. Hazratbal bakery  outside Hazratbal shrine makes some of the best of Kashmiri breads such as Baqerkhani . Must buy a box of Walnut Fudge from there.

Lunch at Stream Restaurant, Boulevard Road , Opposite Ghat No.2 [ Mr Shakeel K. Owner  – Phone 0194 250 0244  ] .

3 PM  : Visit Kashmir Box : Indo-Kashmir Complex, Nawab Bazar . Phone: 0194-2503735/ 9797978377 . Look around shops in Lal Chowk , Polo View Road , Boulevard Road .

Different kinds of walnuts like kagzi walnuts  and spices like saffron, shah zira and honey are some of the specialities of Srinagar .You can pick up real good shelled kagzi type walnuts and almonds from Jain Stores, Koker Bazar , Opposite Gurudwara Sahib, Lal Chowk  [ Owner –  Anil Kumar Jain – Phones :  0194 2475415 ,  9419006857 ] @ 20-25% cheaper than the rates for similar quality elsewhere.

Amin-Bin-Khalik,  [ Noor Ul Amin – Phone : 99065 98692 ,  97970 61924 ]  This store, located at ABK House,1/A Polo View, is known to sell dry fruits of particularly high quality  .   M Sadiq and Sons on Polo View Street stands out for the quality and design of products that it sells – such as trays , boxes , pen stands  and other papier mache products     [ Phone :  9419002345 ] .

Visit  Zaina Kadal Market – a traditional market selling spices, handicrafts and copper vessels . The Zaina Kadal Bridge, which connects the Bohri Kadal area of old Srinagar with the Nawab Bazaar area, is the lifeline of old Srinagar and is one of the most ancient of seven bridges constructed on the Jhelum river in the city.

Baqerkhani, a flaky pastry serves as a good snack for a round of evening tea.  Ahdoos Bakery on Residency Road, Regal Chowk, Lal Bagh [ Phone: 94194 24692/ 0194 247 2593]   sells delicious Kashmiri breads and variety of puffs

Dinner and overnight at the Hotel .

Day 7

Check out and depart @ 11.15 AM  for Srinagar International Airport [average travel time : 35-40 minutes ]  to board Spice Jet Flight at 14.40 hrs .

  1. Bloody good High quality blog. Will track the tour and hopefully plan one for myself too.

    • This is the dream trip of my life time, Avijit . The last time I went to all these awesome places was sometime in 1960 with my father . My planned trips to Kashmir with my wife in 2013 and 2015 did not materialise due to civil disturbances and floods .
